Topsec Science & Cyber Expo: Key cybersecurity trends and insights

By Cian Fitzpatrick | 16th December 2024

On the same day as Storm Darragh rolled into town (Thursday 5th December), Topsec hosted our highly anticipated cyber event at Explorium in Sandyford. The event brought together industry experts to discuss the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape, discuss new trends and highlight ways to build digital safety and resilience. Attendees gained critical insights into emerging cyber threats and innovative defense strategies. The event shared advanced solutions to help businesses stay protected in an ever-evolving digital landscape.

Rising threats in 2025: What’s on the horizon?

The digital threat landscape is only becoming more sophisticated. Staying aware of several alarming trends is key to keeping your organisation safe:

  • Post-Delivery URL and QR Code Poisoning: These attacks are rapidly gaining traction, exploiting users even after emails pass initial security scans.
  • AI-Driven Threats: Business Email Compromise (BEC) 2.0, powered by AI, has surged by 20%, thus contributing to 40% of all BEC campaigns.
  • Spear Phishing Campaigns: Though they account for only 0.1% of email phishing attacks, these campaigns are responsible for a staggering 66% of breaches.
  • Ransomware and Social Engineering: Classic threats like phishing, fileless malware and supply chain compromises remain potent. Targets are not only corporate systems but also personal devices.T

Barriers to stronger cybersecurity

Despite these growing challenges, organisations face hurdles in fortifying their defenses. Key issues include:

  • Insufficient Budgets: A significant 65% of organisations cite budget constraints as a barrier to adopting robust email security solutions.
  • Skill Gaps: A lack of in-house cybersecurity expertise affects 75% of businesses, leaving them vulnerable to sophisticated attacks.
  • Compliance Overload: Regulatory demands, such as NIS2, ISO and DMARC compliance, are stretching resources thin. This emphasises the need for advanced automation and archiving solutions.

Topsec’s roadmap: Innovations for resilience

The Topsec team unveiled our forward-thinking roadmap during the event. In addition, exciting new developments were introduced designed to tackle emerging threats.

  1. AI and Machine Learning Quarantine Assessment:

    • Leveraging advanced neural networks like T5 text-to-text transformers, Topsec is enhancing its threat detection capabilities.
    • By analysing datasets from Topsec’s logs and threat partner data, our AI models are poised to identify and neutralise sophisticated attacks.

  1. Real-Time and Retrospective Scanning:

    • To counter rising QR code and URL-based threats, Topsec now offers five-day re-scans of email attachments and URLs, ensuring no malicious activity slips through.
  2. Public File Share Protection:

    • Enhanced tools now analyze public file shares for potential risks, enabling businesses to act retrospectively to remove compromised files and safeguard data.
  3. Microsoft 365 Inbox Protect:

    • This solution provides advanced URL analysis and search-and-remove functionalities. It also includes expanded retrospective scanning, making it essential for businesses using Microsoft 365.

Takeaways for businesses

Cybersecurity must evolve at the pace of cyber threats. Businesses must invest in advanced solutions, not just to protect against known threats but to anticipate and counteract the unknown.

Here are a few key recommendations:

  • Invest in Security Awareness Training: Humans remain the first line of defense. Empower your workforce to recognise phishing, social engineering and other threats.
  • Adopt AI-Powered Solutions: Automation is no longer a luxury but a necessity to stay ahead of cybercriminals leveraging AI.
  • Prioritise Compliance and Archiving: Meeting regulatory requirements is not just about avoiding penalties; it’s about building a resilient foundation for future operations.

Looking ahead

Topsec Explorium 2024 showcased why cybersecurity isn’t just an IT concern. It’s a business imperative. As threats evolve, so must our defenses. The good news is that AI can be harnessed for good as well as bad. With innovations in technology and a proactive approach to threat management, Topsec is setting the standard for cybersecurity excellence for all of our clients.
